Generally, there isn’t any good image for those clubs which provide male companions… but the club in Ouran High School is an exception. Originally, it was a girl’s comic written by Ms. Bisuco Hatori and was serialized in LaLa, one of the girl’s comic magazine. Then it was animated on TV, game was produced, tuned into live action drama on TV, and moreover, it was made into live action movie. You can see it was a very popular work.
The setting was at Ouran High School where children from upper-class family registered. Haruhi Fujioka, main character who is commoner and scholarship student, found the third music room when “he” was trying to find quiet place to study. However, in the third music room, a group of people were gorgeously in action as “Hosting Club” by the purpose that “a handsome boy having too much time on his hands entertains and quenches a female student having too much time on her hands”. Carelessly, Haruhi broke an expensive vase and became a page of “Hosting Club” in order to pay for its damage, eight million yen. However, when members of “Hosting Club” found out that Haruhi has a beautiful face without glasses, Haruhi was promoted to a receptionist of “Hosting Club” and was given the assignment to get a hundred exclusive customers (later on added a hundred more customers) to discharge a debt. However, Haruhi actually is a girl, and all members of “Hosting Club” find it out soon after the story starts. The story describes Haruhi’s and those members’ every days, which are gorgeous yet slapstick.
First of all, I think the interesting part of this story is ridiculous son, Tamaki (nickname: King, yet self-appointed), and his unpredictable characteristics. He loves folksy noodle (instant noodle), folksy snack (confectionery), and Kotatsu (folksy table over an electric heater with a hanging quilt that retains heat). He started “Hosting Club” only because “He can have fun”. He is a charismatic person who always twists everyone’s life around him purely and very innocently. For example, he described himself as “tremendously handsome” when he was helping Haruhi to find her lost property together in a pond. He extended a helping hand to Haruhi when she was stuck in a closet frighten of thunder… which actually was a very handsome and cool action, yet he fantasize about school days and even a married life with Haruhi (which is very girlish and gross!). Even more, he tried to stop Haruhi from kissing a girl’s cheek, but accidentally pushed her back by slipping on a banana skin. As a whole, he is quite disappointing, but do show a handsome and cool aspect sometimes. This unbalance aspect is definitely one of the interesting parts of the story! In the animation, Mamoru Miyano was voice actor of Tamaki, and I became a fan of him through this work. He was a well-suited role that much!
However, the most recommended story is where Haruhi and Kiharu going on a date, which was broadcasted as 16th episode on animation. It was an episode that mainly spotted on Hikaru Hitachiin, an older twin brother with Kaoru, and was a very valuable episode that shows a girly appearance of Haruhi with a wig. At the ending of the episode, Haruhi run away into a church because she was too scared of thunder. Then here comes my favorite scene, in which Hikaru found her, and gave her his head-phone and comfort her very nicely. In this connection I may add that two people are actually got married in real life so… I cannot stop smirking every time I watch it. Moreover, Kaoru, a younger twin brother with Hikaru, keeps a very close watch Haruhi and Hikaru, yet seems like he is also kind of into Haruhi… Well, sorry to Tamaki, but personally I got to say this is my favorite!
In “Hosting Club” there are other unique characters, including senior student “intellectual glass” Kyoya, senior student “too cute high school boy” Honey, and senior student “reticent older brother” Mori. The original work was concluded too, so I would really like if same members can finish the work of visualization. I am very interested how experienced Mamoru would act Tamaki now.
