Gin no Saji (Silver Spoon) is an animation which tells us how important food and life are.
Hachiken Yugo, a central character, got neurotic from tiring of parents and school who measure him only by test score. To escape from the environment just about study, he took agriculture high school entrance exam. As a result, he passed the exam and went on to the school. There was a world he never knew about.
The original author of this anime is the same as Fullmetal Alchemist. Different from Fullmetal Alchemist, this is not fantasy but factual portrait. For example, how foods on the table are processed, how pigs are farmed before they become pork and how who slaughter pigs. The author depicts these truly by putting his experience to use.
I have read this comic. It is interesting. I have the knowledge how foods are processed but it was the first time for me to be well explained in picture. For example, how to farm cattle, pig and chicken, how to process cheese, how to cook hearth-baked pizza, how to manage farm, how to ride a horse and how to spend school days in agricultural high school. Since I am metropolitan, it was a very new experience for me! This generation of young people will feel the same as me.
The comics are running and published up to volume 8. It became a big hit selling over 10 million copies!! This comic awarded many prizes and was made into live-action film. This is the most remarkable agricultural anime! It is very good as school-life story with very individualistic characters!! But!!! I don't recommend to watch this at midnight!!! Because those foods in the anime look very delicious!! Especially, the episode of hearth-baked pizza is dangerous!!! If you watch it when you are hungry, you must have a sudden urge for something to eat!!
