What kind of story is it? It's an original story based on the 6th season of the anime, featuring Kitarou's father, 'Medama-Oyaji', and a man in his 30s named Mizuki who accidentally meets Medama-Oyaji and gets involved in a 'strange incident' that occurs in a village!

About 70 years ago, shortly after WWII, various companies in Japan were desperate to expand their markets to recover from the defeat. Amidst this, in a remote village in the mountains of Japan, the head of a family with immense power, the Ryuga, passed away. The Ryuga family was providing a pharmaceutical company, run by the young Mizuki, with a secret medicine that gave vitality as if granting immortality when consumed.

Mizuki uses his company's connections to secretly investigate who will become the next head of the Ryuga family and what the ingredients of the medicine are. On his way to the village dominated by the Ryuga family, he meets a yokai man who is searching for his 'missing wife'.

This yokai man later becomes Kitaro's father, Medama-Oyaji. Interestingly, he still has a human form at this time.

The secret of the Ryuga family, the ingredients of the medicine, the missing wife of a yokai...... What's really happening in this closed-off village? The two men who meet by chance will work together to confront the mysterious events occurring in this eerie village......!

In my opinion, the reason for its big hit is primarily because it's 'entertaining even if you know nothing about it'! That's the key! Even without any knowledge, it's sufficiently engaging as a buddy action movie that delves into the mystery of a strange incident in a village!

And at the same time, the story is good. Really good. This movie is rated R-12, meaning it's not recommended for children under 12 without a guardian. It's not too scary, but it has an indescribably eerie atmosphere, like peering into the depths of a deep well, and the intrigue of unraveling scattered mysteries is just fantastic! Watching the movie again after knowing the ending completely changes the impression, which is excellent!

To sum up, it's a 'casually watchable, well-crafted, and interesting anime movie,' which is why it's a big hit in Japan! I think so too!
