Shoujo Kakumei Utena is the story that central character Tenjo Utena "revolutionizes world".
When Utena was young, she lost her parents and she met "a prince on a white horse". The prince rescued her from sadness. Utena hoped "I want to see him again and live an exalted life". As a result, she was grown up to be a cool girl having strong sense of justice like a “prince”!
In the school Utena admitted, students have a “duel” over Himemiya Anthy who will give the winner “power to revolutionize world”. Utena gets involved in the duel to help Anthy!!
The ending of this story is bit different between comics and anime. If you oscillate, I recommend anime first.
Japanese fans of this anime speak very highly of this anime saying “It was too early to broadcast this anime in 90s. It is still early in 2000s”. I cannot believe this anime was broadcast at 6 p.m. on Wednesday which has great interpretation of the world, artistic quality, music and story and sometimes has extreme expression (if this anime was broadcast these days, it should be midnight anime time)!
I was an elementary school student when I watched this anime. However, I couldn’t understand “which world did Utena revolutionized” until I watched it again when I was college student. When I watched it again, I was surprised the true meaning of lines and noticed metaphor.
The interpretation of the world was made very use of Mawaru-Penguindrum too which the same director made! Both of them stick to each theme and you will surprise the ending of the story!
