Usogui is well-known, along with other gambling manga such as Kaiji and LIAR GAME! Its live action movie is also releasing this month but...... what kind of story is it? Let’s take a look!

What Is Usogui?

Usogui is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Sako Toshio-Sensei. It was serialized in Young Jump from 2006 to 2018, with its chapters compiled into 49 tankobon volumes.
8.8 million copies have been sold and some episodes have been made into OVA too. Its live action movie is scheduled to release in February 2022.

They met for the first time in a Pachinko parlor (with slot machines) in town.
A coward boy, Kaji, saves a stranger (a boy) who had a difficult time figuring out how to play slot.

One day, the main protagonist, Kaji, sees a boy, in the Pachinko parlor, who is about to leave there, thinking that he is lost, although he has actually won. Kaji kindly calls to him and tells him that he has actually won. Thanks to Kaji, the boy wins 100,000 yen (≒ 870 dollars) out of 1,000 yen. The boy really thanks Kaji.
The boy’s name is Baku and he is actually known as a legendary gambler.
He has never lost gambling, especailly in-person gambling with high insight and skills of reading peoples’ mind. However...... there’s one gambling that he has lost before.
Baku has lost a bet held in the gambling club, called Kakerou, in the shadowy world. Kakerou is an abnormal gambling club, where they bet not only on money but also on status or honor, and even on their “lives.”
Baku decides to challenge to the head of Kakerou who has beat him before, for another bet after Baku meets Kaji. Baku proudly says “I do gamble just to win.” But what Kaji did is......?
So...... you know Usogui, Boss?
OMG~~~~ it’s so awesome. Although they are all simple games, the gamblers try to cheat each other, while ‘betting their lives.’

Hangman

This is a mix-game of “Old Maid” and “Hangman.”
The game itself is a regular Old Maid, however, the joker has the Roman numerals on it. The one who lost the game gains Hangman by the Roman numerals. The one who has got the whole Hangman’s counts ends up losing.

Brazen bull

Both players need a stopwatch in this game. It’s such a simple game, where they guess time when the opponent stops the stopwatch.
The error of the seconds from the correct time is accumulated. The one with fewer error gets the “right to play,” meaning he/she can roast the opponent for the duration time by the difference of each other’s remaining total seconds.

Airpoker

Literally, it’s “poker.” As condition, though, it has to be played “in the water.” They bet “air” they inhale.
Moreover, there are also some irregular cards, which we don’t see in the regular poker, mixed in all the cards. Simply, the more time you spend on thinking, the more air you waste, therefore, you need instant judgement.
The games are so simple but how they play is super cruel, huh?
Right. The simpler, the more important the cheating becomes. The best part about Usogui is that they play in the familiar and simple games, while gambling and trying to win~! I never play and think of poker this way but I get a different image, being influenced by Usogui, especially after reading it!

Oh, you know what? We can see some original games in a live action movie, which we have never seen in manga. (If my memory is right,) I don’t think there is a game related with airplanes......
