What kind of story is Umibe no Étranger?

The author is Ki Kanna, who used to be an animator. She is currently a Manga author, artist and illustrator. This title is her debut manga. It was serialized in 2014, as one-shot. However, it got so popular that it became a regular serialized series and got ranked in top five in “the best BL comics 2015, recommended by all-Japan book stores.” After that, it’s even got the sequel, Harukaze no Étranger.
Since she used to be an animator and currently an illustrator, all the quality, such as coloring and drawing, are quite high!

Outline of Umibe no Étranger

A high school boy, Mio, lost his parents, and started living with his relative in Okinawa. Even though his relatives treated him kindly, he couldn’t get closer to them because he was still struggling with his loss.
There was a boy who has been worried about Mio.
His name was Shun, wanting to become a novelist in the future. He cancelled his marriage, which was arranged by his parents. On top of that, he confessed that he was a gay. To stay away with his parents who lived in Tokyo, he visited his relative in Okinawa.
Mio, looking lonely every day, was doing nothing but looking at the sea. Shun, just watching over him from distance, one day tried talking to him.
Not knowing how Shun could keep distance from Mio first, they gradually started to talk.
While talking, Shun started to think that “maybe Mio doesn’t want to go home?” and tried asking her “Aren’t you lonely all by yourself all the time?” It was exactly what Mio was thinking but he said to Shun, “You’re ‘creepy’ too, always staring at me from distance.”
For Shun, that word ‘creepy’ has become a trauma, which can never be healed. He lost consciousness and next time he woke up, he was at home. It looks like he was carried to his home after he passed out.

「たまたま同性が恋愛の対象って、ただそれだけなのに……なんでそれが、世間ではおかしなことなんだろうな。」
“Why can’t we normally love each other…… Why can’t we, both men, be accepted completely in society?”

Next day, Mio visited Shun to apologize.
Mio confessed to Shun that he had been alone all the time because he wanted to shut out people around him, who always felt sorry for him, having lost his parents. He continued, “I think it’s only me that knows how much I miss my parents or how sad I am. It’s always easy for you to feel sorry for others…… That’s why I said that to you.”
Then Shun confessed too: “I talked to you not because I felt sorry for you but…… because you were ‘beautiful.’ You attracted me. I had ulterior motive too.”

「しょうもない理由、ナンパみたいじゃん。……でも、よかった。」
“Seriously? You were just trying to hit on me, huh? …… But I’m relieved now.”

They both were able to tell each other something that they hadn’t told anybody except for their family.
And right before Mio left Shun’s house that day, Mio told Shun that he had a secret place which he went to with his mother. And he continued…… the next day, he was taken to the orphanage and has never been able to see her until he grew up.
Mio, then, kissed Shun on the cheek.
And he promised that he would call him when he gets to the orphanage.
Three years have passed without any phone calls from him.
Except that Shun got a post card from Mio, saying “Congrats!” when Shun’s novel got awarded. Shun, who now is 27 years old, is still waiting for Mio’s call.
One day, someone moved in to the house next to Shun’s. The person was…… Mio, who grew up and left the orphanage.
Mio said he had been thinking what is Shun for him for three years. And he said he finally came to see him since he’s got the answer.

「俺、駿のこと好きだよ。だから俺のこと、好きになってよ。」
“I love you, Shun. So…… can you love me too?”

What are these now-grownups two going to do……? Oh, by the way, this happened all in Episode 1 so I didn’t even give you any spoilers yet! In the movie, their sad relationship and a beautiful view in Okinawa will be depicted more colorful! The movie releases on September 11th, so you can review the story with comics too! Of course you can just wait for the movie to release too! Just do however you want and watch over them!!
