Once again, it’s summer anime time! The one I’m introducing this time is a modern-day human drama gag comedy that feels light and somehow relatable! Episode 1 of this unique story about an unusual but heartwarming exchange...... was just fantastic!

【Summer Anime】 Music Makes Everything Better! A Hilarious ‘Cross-Cultural Exchange’ Between a Choir Boy and a Yakuza! Episode 1 of Karaoke Iko Has Begun!

Since the story centers on karaoke, it really shines in anime format! If you’re looking for a super casual and fun modern anime, Karaoke Iko is highly recommended!

Let me start with my personal impression: this series is so well-suited for both anime and live-action! The story, in short, follows a young yakuza who must improve his singing before the group’s karaoke contest—or else face a terrible punishment. Desperate, he seeks help from a middle school choir boy he randomly meets. But this boy, too, has his own struggles with singing...... That’s the premise!

It’s not a story about aiming to be a professional! That makes it a bit more relaxed to watch, and lets you focus more on the relationship between the two characters! The way the voice actors sing also helps you understand much better than in the manga—making it way easier to follow!

The story doesn't change much between the anime and manga, but adding sound, movement, and voice really brings out just how ‘not great’ the singing is—which is actually a good thing! They sing actual band songs in karaoke, not original tracks, so you can really tell how good or bad they are. Great direction and clear structure! The yakuza’s goal to improve his singing is set, but I’m also excited to see how this strange relationship between him and the choir boy will unfold!

Let me say this up front: this is a very funny and heartwarming human comedy—you won’t be seeing any tragic stuff! It’s a safe and highly recommended watch. So if you haven’t seen it yet, especially if you love karaoke, definitely follow this cross-cultural—no, cross-world—exchange between two very different people!
